The Flowers

Though we aren’t certified organic, we grow with strict organic practices using non-GMO seeds and only organic composts, soils, and fertilizers. We like to plant bird, bee, and butterfly friendly flowers to work with nature and keep our posies happy. It’s always nice to hear our customers say how much longer our blooms last and the beautiful smells that fill their homes. We harvest our blossoms the morning before our shop is open which gives you the freshest of flowers lasting up to two weeks with proper care. We always recommend trimming half an inch off of the stems and changing your flower’s water every other day. Buying local and following these steps can significantly extend the life of your bouquet.

The Farm

Bought back in 1941 by my husband Joel’s grandparents, Jack and Lee Ella. They cleared the 218 acre piece of land, built a house, added a couple of wells, and raised Polled Hereford cattle. Not an easy job by any sense of the word. Joel and I have taken a piece of this ranch and turned it into a 2 1/2 acre flower haven with larkspur in the spring, zinnias in the summer and sunflowers in the fall with many more in between. The farm is cradled between a narrow forested hillside and a tranquil creek. Every now and again after a rain, we find arrowheads peaking out from the ground, reminding us of the history and past residents of this extraordinary place we call home.

The Farmer

Howdy, my name is Kim. I’m a fourth generation Texan, born in Austin. My ancestors came to Galveston from Germany on the ship “The Sara Ann” in 1845. My parents Ira and Beverly taught me to work hard, be honest, do your best and give back. I take these values to heart and put them into the work I do on the farm every day. I love sharing what I’ve learned from growing flowers. Sometimes people say to me, “I didn’t think you could grow these flowers in Texas.” It can take a little extra care but for me, it’s so worth it.

My path to Nutty Brown Farm started when my daughters headed off to college. In the midst of this transition, I came across an article in Texas Gardening Magazine about a flower farm in Houston and was immediately hooked. I truly love the way nature takes a tiny seed, cracks it open with a little water and soil and gives you this beautiful colorful blossom. I felt a strong desire to open my own flower farm and explore what it could blossom into, and here we are.

My Husband Joel, Mr. Fixit

I couldn’t do this without the help of the love of my life, my husband Joel, a true jack of all trades who can fix anything, and who has supported me through this journey. Whether it’s fixing a problem with the tractor, patching a water leak, or helping me build the infrastructure of this farm, he is always there to help.
